Our path towards more energy efficiency in production
EKPI environmental key performance indicators in 2014, in comparison to 2004
WE USE TOMORROW’S SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES, TODAY.
ADDED VALUE FOR HUMANITY, THE ENVIRONMENT, AND THE CLIMATE.
Acting and doing business sensibly is a core element of our corporate strategy and determines our value chain. Our primary concern is making a long-term contribution to balancing the interests of companies, people, and the environment. Our driving force: to create value for the company worldwide with next-level innovations. Our aim: to ensure ContiTech is well-equipped to meet the challenges of the future in the long term - alongside our partners and customers.
77% waste recycling and reuse rate
In 2014, our recycling rate was 77%.
37% less waste per ton of final product
We have reduced the amount of waste we produce by 37%.
11% less CO2 emissions per ton of final product
Our CO2 emissions declined by around 11%.
11% less water consumption per ton of final product
Our water consumption has been close to 10-12 l per ton of final product for many years. This is a very low level of consumption, compared to other industries.
22% savings in fossil fuels burned per ton of final product
We have reduced our consumption of fossil fuels by around 22%.
17% less power consumption per ton of final product
We have reduced our power consumption by 17%. We encourage our employees to help us move towards more energy efficiency by contributing their own ideas.
Conserving resources systematically
Performance indicators for lower consumption
Faced with increasingly scarce natural resources, developing the most eco-friendly production methods possible is paramount for ContiTech. Our principle: we rely on sustainable practices and manufacturing processes. These include targeted steps to save energy, lower CO2 emissions, reduce waste production, and recycle materials. We are replacing more and more of the chemical components in our products with renewable raw materials.
Under the framework of international standard ISO 14001, we bring in independent auditors annually to certify that we meet binding objectives at each of our locations. Environmental requirements are an integral part of how we select suppliers.
Performance indicators provide important information
Since 1999, we have been continuously collecting environmental performance figures for all ContiTech Group production locations.
Our goals are ambitious ones: we want to reduce CO2 emissions from our manufacturing processes by a total of about 20% by the year 2020, in accordance with the objectives of the new Continental environmental strategy for 2020 (reference year 2013). In addition, we are also aiming to further reduce our energy and water consumption and the amount of waste generated with the goal of achieving a reduction of 3 % in each of these areas year on year, plus an annual 2 % increase in our waste recycling and reuse rate. We will reduce our consumption of raw materials by using more recycled materials. In this way, we indirectly contribute to reducing energy consumption in raw material extraction and production. Intelligent energy management
These figures are the result of a rigorous energy management and monitoring system. ContiTech Engineering (CTE), developed for this purpose, is a cross-location function that advises each individual business unit worldwide on more efficient energy production, distribution, and conservation. We are optimizing our processes by implementing ISO standard 50001 for energy management systems, first published in 2011. We encourage our employees to help us move towards more energy efficiency by contributing their own ideas.
